About the event

Samantha Barbas is a professor and the Aliber Family Chair in Law at University of Iowa College of Law. She specializes in media and First Amendment law and legal history. Barbas is also a distinguished lecturer at the Organization of American Historians and gave the 2023 Constitution Day lecture for the Law Library of Congress. The author of seven books on media law and history, her most recent is “Actual Malice: Civil Rights and Freedom of the Press in New York Times v. Sullivan.” Barbas’ commentary on free speech and libel law issues has appeared in The Washington Post, The New York Times and USA Today, among other publications. Her recognition includes the 2020 National Endowment for the Humanities Public Scholar Award.
