About the Event

The current educational model was created during the industrial revolution to produce workers who could precisely complete repetitive tasks within a hierarchical organization.  This was useful in the 20th century, but will be less so in the future our current students face.  Ironically the answer for the future is to return to our past.  Scott Looney, Head of School at Hawken School and Founder of the Mastery Transcript Consortium, will explore the growing movement in education: Mastery based learning.  This is not a new movement, but a return to the oldest form of human learning.  Mastery based education asks students to work on increasingly complex tasks in a real world context under the guidance of an expert mentor, persisting to mastery past early stage failures.   Hawken School founded the Mastery Transcript Consortium in 2016 to provide a new way to present student achievement to colleges and employers, and is in the process of launching a new high school, the Mastery School of Hawken, meant to be a model for other schools interested in Mastery learning to follow.
